History of the Whetstone July 4th Celebration

Since 1952, residents of northern Columbus have enjoyed a full day of July 4th events in the 90-acre Whetstone Park in Clintonville.

The day traditionally began with the “Clintonville Community Breakfast” at the gateway to the Park of Roses. The breakfast was hosted by the Northern Business and Professional Association with support from Clintonville businesses and volunteer support from the North Area Real Estate Association and the Clintonville Area Commission.

The breakfast was followed by the “Clintonville Pet Parade and Show” and the “Clintonville on Wheels Parade.” Many other activities filled the park through the years.

After some recent years of uncertainty, Clintonville leaders joined in June, 1999 to form a new corporation to assume responsibilities for the Whetstone Park July 4thcelebration. Titled, Clintonville July 4th Celebration, Inc., the 501c3 organization has brought stability and direct Clintonville community participation to the event.

The board of directors of Clintonville July 4th Celebration, Inc. seeks each year to bring activities to the park that encourage neighborhood families and friends to enjoy the entire day in this beautiful neighborhood park. The Clintonville Fund of the Columbus Foundation has taken over the hosting of the perennially popular July 4th breakfast and the Clintonville Area Chamber of Commerce provides music leading up to the fireworks.

Indeed, the contributions — whether of time or money — are needed from all of you to keep this a Clintonville neighborhood-sponsored event. Enjoy our Clintonville July 4th celebration!
